What is Cyberpunk?
The Cyberpunk Project describes "cyberpunk music" as follows:
"Real cyberpunks listen to whatever the fuck they want!"
and
"[...] one result I liked was, that cyberpunk music would be a mix between hardcore techno and heavy/black metal, with lyrics like punk music (but about future, technology and cyberculture)." - Cyborg
The music of Bubblegum Crisis is nearly as important as the visuals. AnimEigo originally described BGC as the "Cyberpunk Classic," what is so cyberpunk of the OVA? Its attitude, visuals, mechanics, and music. The original music carried a Japanese synthesized rock sound from the late Eighties, a sound that most will recognize today as being from that era. Compared to the modern evolution of the cyberpunk sound, the original soundtrack doesn't hold a candle, plus the various styles, such as American, European, and Japanese make todays sound much different than the original.
Then came the BGC television series with a sound all it's own, more of a rock than cyberpunk. It's a sound that matched the new series quite well, with adrenalin pumping guitar riffs mixed with todays use of synthesizer. This new sound matched Cyberpunk Project's second definition quite well. A sound that should be enhanced, and pushed even further for this movie.
